Did You Know?

Charlotteans have a history of reinventing themselves.  The city was settled by subsistence farmers and merchants in the 1700s. The spirit of our founders live on. In 1799 gold was discovered in Concord. This kicked off a gold rush that lasted from 1799 to 1837. Once the gold rush ended in Charlotte, there was a mass exodus that was halted by the railroad. In 1852 community leaders brought the first leg of the easter rail lne through Charlotte. We became a commercial rail hub on the east coast. This set us up for success after the Civil war. The railroads enabled Charlotte and the surrounding area to become a textile powerhouse. The Charlotte that visitors will see is the results of the money earned in the textile industry. We are now a commercial rail hub, a distribution center on the east coast, and last but not least the second largest banking center in the United States.
